Commonwealth Youth Forum 2009

The Youth Forum has been organised by the Trinidad and Tobago Government in association with the Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council and the Commonwealth Youth Programme.

Among its objectives are the development of young people’s understanding of the Commonwealth and its values; the creation of a platform for young people to contribute to Commonwealth and CHOGM agendas; and the promotion of networking and interchange between young people and their organisations.

The final communiqué from the CYF is circulated at CHOGM and presented to the Commonwealth Secretariat, thereby giving the young people of the Commonwealth a chance to have their opinions heard by the Heads of State.

Music, dance, action - the wow factor!

The opening ceremony started with a bang after the amazing Hill Song choir gave us a beautiful rendition of the Trinibagonion (Trinidad and Tobagon) national anthem.

We then heard some empowering welcoming speeches from Matthew Albert (Pan-Commonwealth Youth Caucus Chair), the head of the Tobagon House of Assembly and the T&T minister of sport and youth affairs.

We have a packed programme for the next 7 days; plenaries, discussions, negotiations, learning journeys and endless opportunity for informal exchange. This you could easily work out from looking in the information provided to us. I wanted to take this opportunity though to speak about the bigger picture that these events fit into.

I'm here at Mt. Irvine hotel (which i must say though without any offense intended that my hotel - Le Grande Courlan is the best hotel in CYF) helping out the local planning team to register people up in their thematic areas. So far the youths of Trinidad have come through the system and a lot of them are really interested in the area of Youth Involvement in Decision making. Slowly the Tobago youth are streaming in for registration, and very very slowly the International delegations are arriving into Tobago.

Delegates will be arriving for the Commonwealth Youth Forum today.

You can find out more about the Forum from this fact sheet on the CHOGM website.

The 2009 Commonwealth Youth Forum is about to start in two days. The final planning is under way and led by the international youth planing team which is constituted of youth from all the regions of the Commonwealth joined by the local team from T&T.
