Commonwealth Week – Commonwealth Youth Action Event

'Our Commonwealth, Our Future’

A Commonwealth Event for Young Adults## an event planned and led by young adults.

Date: Wednesday March 14th 2012
Time: 12:30 – 17:30
Venue: Royal Commonwealth Society, Central London

There are over 2 billion people living in Commonwealth countries; two-thirds of them are under 25. Young people are a crucial yet largely untapped asset, vital to the future of a stronger 21st century Commonwealth.

What are the issues young adults are concerned about and how is the Commonwealth responding and relevant to their lives?

This day was an opportunity for young people to hear more about Commonwealth issues, meet Commonwealth organisations and find out how to get more involved.

The day included:

• Round table discussions on the following provisional themes:
o Commonwealth Values, Human Rights and a new Commonwealth Charter
o Youth Voice and the Commonwealth
o Sport and Development
o Girls and young women and meeting the global development targets
o Environmental Issues and Climate Change
• Young people’s views from around the Commonwealth
• Information on the Diamond Jubilee Time Capsule Project and how to get involved
• The UK Government View: Lord Howell, FCO Minister
• A Question Time panel

Partners for this event include the Royal Commonwealth Society, Commonwealth Youth Programme and Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

CYEC is grateful to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office for their support, and also to the Royal Commonwealth Society for their help in kind.
