‘One might think that seeing extreme poverty might have a negative effect on a 17 year old but for me, it simply opened my eyes. I saw people with nothing; no electricity or running water. I felt more admiration for the people in Gambia than pity. Amongst all the poverty, the children would still laugh and dance and the women took so much pride in looking their best.’
