Web Skills for Guyana

In Summer 2009, a small team of young adults (18 - 35) spent six-weeks in Guyana running workshops, training events and skill-sharing sessions with young people to develop the online skills of young people in Guyana.

The need for such a project has been identified through the work of VSO Volunteer Jane Quinn (on a year our from her work with the education team at the BBC) and CYEC are involved in recruiting and supporting the UK team of young online experts.

We asked the host organisations in Guyana to put together the short video below to give you a flavour of the need for the project...

Week 4 course – Quiz

To round off the course and consolidate the learning of the previous weeks, we ended the course with a quiz. 38 points were up for grabs and we were pleasantly surprised by how much all the groups got into it. There were some pretty high scorers too, so they must’ve all been paying attention.
Here are the questions:

Interview with Pontus

Pontus was only able to make the first two weeks of the project but was an indispensable part of the team, developing the HTML, CSS and advanced HTML parts of the course.

Feeding the manatees

Now I’m back in England (and in an office with an incredible broadband connection) I’m able to upload some of the video that I took while out in Guyana.
I’ve got interviews with some of the other guys to come. In the meantime, here’s some footage of us (mainly Pontus here) feeding the manatees in the Georgetown National Park:

After finishing the course with our final workshop last Friday and saying goodbye to Chris, who had an early morning flight on Saturday, Matt and me hit the road for our longest trip away from Georgetown yet: a four day excursion to the far south of the country.

Week 0 – Flash Animation Course Day 3

Day 3 Morning – MovieClips and Tweens
The first part of the morning was spent showing the class the two major tweens used in flash before CS4: Motion and shape. Tweens are a kind of shortcut for animation in flash. You put the object you want to animate in a position at the first and last frames you want to animate and flash does the rest of the work.
