Web Skills for Guyana

In Summer 2009, a small team of young adults (18 - 35) spent six-weeks in Guyana running workshops, training events and skill-sharing sessions with young people to develop the online skills of young people in Guyana.

The need for such a project has been identified through the work of VSO Volunteer Jane Quinn (on a year our from her work with the education team at the BBC) and CYEC are involved in recruiting and supporting the UK team of young online experts.

We asked the host organisations in Guyana to put together the short video below to give you a flavour of the need for the project...

Hi there, my name’s Chris Unitt and I’m one of the team who’ll be teaching the Web Skills course out in Guyana. I leave in just over 36 hours and the anticipation levels are rising!

Damn, just lost a massive post, to summarize:

First day of course went fantastically well, looking forward to tomorrow.

Lots of great reactions from students and they pick it up fast.

Nose has stopped bleeding. It was due to Hay-fever, solution: take medication.

Lost a lot of writing. Bad end to good day. Pissed off.

It’s three days since Matt and I landed in Georgetown, Guyana. Yet we’ve only just got around to posting a blog.

Pretty pitiful for a web skills development project, I’m sure you’ll agree (especially considering our flat’s internet connection is pretty good – thanks to our kind VSO neighbours who usually rent this roomy two bed out for their volunteers.)

Frantic final preparation is being  carried out at the Commonwealth Youth Exchange office in Clapham.

Matt is pacing about, waiting for his Flash manual to finish photocopying, Helen is arranging travel insurance, Hugh is putting the final touches to his GIMP course and I’ve just finished setting up web hosting.

Chris is on holiday in Devon.

I guess he will be the one carrying all the stuff onto the plane.

Hello and welcome to Digital Guyana – a blog from a four man team of 20-something web enthusiasts who are travelling to Guyana in South America in July 2009 to teach web skills at the behest of the CYEC (Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council).

Stay tuned for more…
