Commonwealth Youth Climate Summit
Reflections from Canada
I had the great opportunity to participate in the Commonwealth Youth Climate Change Summit in October 2009. Although it was a last minute decision to attend, I have absolutely no regrets that I attended the summit. One of the many reasons I decided to go was in order to connect with other youth that are interested in doing work surrounding one of today’s most contentious issues: climate change. This is exactly what happened; approximately one hundred youth gathered in representing different countries within the Commonwealth in order to discuss and create solutions surrounding climate change.
The highlight of the summit was the last day where we came together to draft a youth statement to be used when the Commonwealth heads of states gathered during CHOGM (Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting) in Trinidad and Tobago and the United Nations’ Climate Conference in Copenhagen. I really enjoyed this part of the summit because I found that it truly reflected my opinion on climate change and what needed to be done. Another highlight was the organisers of the summit. They were absolutely fantastic! They worked diligently to put on such a successful summit. We also had a chance to brainstorm ways that we can continue to stay in touch, so we can discuss any progress we make in our community.
Once I was back in Canada, I was very excited and ready to keep the momentum going. The young people that gathered were an exceptional bunch, it was such an inspiration to see that there are other youth around the world who are fighting for the same cause. I am looking forward to working and keeping in touch with everyone from the summit.
