CYEC's future: An update on CYEC's funding, March 2013

CYEC is facing an uncertain future due to changes to its funding. CYEC’s Trustees and staff are working hard to find alternative sources of income for the charity. If none of them work out, the charity may need to change radically, merge or close.

The key funding change has been the British Council’s recent decision to cease its funding of Commonwealth youth exchange with effect from the financial year 2013/14. Historically Government funding for Commonwealth Youth Exchanges came via the British Council. In spring 2012 the British Council informed CYEC that it would no longer fund the grants programme for youth exchanges between Commonwealth countries after 2012/13. In November 2012, following renewed dialogue with the British Council, CYEC was asked to submit a new partnership proposal based on strategic exchange and project activity. Sadly, CYEC was told in mid February 2013 that the British Council would not fund the proposed work.

CYEC believes that in the context of current Government policy and forthcoming Commonwealth events (a new Commonwealth Charter highlighting the importance of young people, the hosting of the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and the First World War Centenary Commemorations) the decision to withdraw funding at such short notice is likely to cause significant (perhaps terminal) damage to Commonwealth youth programmes and to CYEC. It risks leaving the UK without an organisation that is dedicated to, and expert in, youth development and the Commonwealth.

CYEC’s trustees and staff appreciate the warm and pro-active support received during this difficult period from a wide range of individuals, organisations, members, alumni of our programmes, stakeholders and others.
